redNests is a one-person web studio run by freelance designer and front-end developer Derek Nelson.

The studio is based in Lanarkshire, Scotland. It was founded in the summer of 2007 to create websites that are:

• designed for a specific purpose.
• simple and easy to use.
• a pleasure to look at.

about Derek Nelson

A designer and developer with over 20 years experience in the information technology field.

Derek currently works for North Lanarkshire Council as part of their website team. He is the technical lead responsible for the management and development of the council’s corporate website. He is also responsible for the project management and development of related websites such as the Adult Protection website and the soon to be launched Theatres website.

The redNests studio exists to give him a creative outlet away from work to develop skills and experience in all areas of web design and development.

Specific skills

Excellent knowledge and experience of:

• HTML, XHTML, CSS and JavaScript.
• Accessibility guidelines and practices.
• Interface design and general design principles.
• User experience disciplines such as usability testing, creating personas, wire-framing and information architecture.
• Content management systems such as Goss iCM, SharePoint and WordPress.
• Project management.
• Business management and marketing.

why redNests?

The name comes from the associations with the words, red and nests.

red - innovative, energy, different, exciting, stop, passion, love, dangerous, attention grabbing, hot, radical, different

Nests - home, safe, secure, has a purpose, built with care, appropriate, a place to grow, structure, design, many materials

When combined they form the website ideal... something that is well-built with a purpose, while at the same time different and attention grabbing.
