We Choose To Go To The Moon…
Monday, 5 January 2009
As is now customary at the start of a new year, I spend some time looking ahead to what the year will hold and what I’d like to achieve.
The tail end of 2008 was a fascinating and challenging time. In December I headed off for a family holiday to Orlando, Florida. Part of this included fulfilling a lifelong dream of visiting Kennedy Space Center, the home of NASA and the Apollo moon missions. I found it incredibly inspirational. It is truly amazing what people can achieve when they have a purpose, a goal and a huge amount of motivation. Standing underneath the Saturn V rocket left me feeling small and insignificant. Yet at the same time inspired and confident that I could achieve the goals and dreams I have.
In the summer of 2007, I set out to establish myself as a web designer. Since then I have been gaining new skills and undertaking new projects. In 2009, I am planning on taking this to the next level.
First and foremost, I will be working with NLC to launch their new website. This project is now at a critical stage with a launch scheduled for late March. This has been a massive project and a fantastic learning experience. In addition to the web designer skills learned, I have also had to up my project management abilities. Working on a website this size, with all of it’s necessary constraints, has been a process that has stretched me in many areas. I am looking forward to the initial website going live plus the development opportunities this new platform will provide.
In addition to this project I have also taken on the voluntary role of web manager for CVCC. So far this has given me the opportunity to create a web strategy for the organisation. As the new year starts we’ll be taking this strategy and making it a reality. This has the potential to be a very exciting project that will include the many facets of modern web design. It will go beyond just the website and include social media, podcasts and mobile technology. Much like NLC it is just the start and holds so many possibilities.
Finally, I’ll be looking to expand the freelance projects that I do. I have the initial goal of completing 6 freelance projects this year. I feel doing this type of work will compliment my other projects much like Pixar create short films as a testing ground for their full length movies. I will also be starting the ball rolling to turn this into a proper business. The first stage of which will be creating a business plan and a roadmap of where I would like to go in the next 3 years.
To help successfully achieve all of the above, I have set myself the goal of reading a web related book every month. These will be split between technical, business and design subjects to give me a good, well-rounded skillset.
In September 1962 John F Kennedy gave a speech at Rice University where he declared “we choose to go to the moon”. In July 1969 Neil Armstrong spoke the immortal words “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. While my year won’t be as big or as monumental I have the same belief that I can achieve my goals and look back on 2009 with pride.
Whatever you have planned for 2009 I wish you every success.
